top 5 karaoke songs… from last night.

May 1, 2007

In order to set a precedent for Monday night debauchery (and to the dismay of my coworker… err friend… Amber… are we there yet?)… we formed an exploratory crew to venture deep into the heart of the Lower East Side to observe hipsters without jobs but with wherewithal to go out in their own habitat… and since Williamsburgh was out of the question… LES it was.

To our surprise… it was a little bit quiet for a nice monday night…. that is until our crew stumbled into Piano’s upstairs lounge. Now Piano’s is a regular and standard favorite of ours in the Lower East Side, but what we found that night was something new… we found Karaoke Killed the Cat!

While we were skeptical at first… we quickly warmed up to the singing and impromptu dancing that followed (perhaps a result of the alcohol, but i refrain from taking away from the greatness that ensued). And so… because karaoke holds a special place in my heart i am reluctant to name the ultimate top 5 karaoke songs (it’s like a mix tape, you need to play to the crowd/listener)… here are the Top 5 Karaoke songs from Karaoke Killed the Cat at Piano’s night of April 30, 2007.

5. Total Eclipse of the Heart, Bonnie Tyler – performed by the hipster trio of all sporting choppy haircuts and ambiguous looking boyfriends… overall awful pitch, great delivery, missed the key change… but made that girl at the bar all the more depressed (she left shortly thereafter, apparently the song held a very special place in her heart)

4. Intergalactic Planetary, Beastie Boys – performed by the guy in the yellow t-shirt, overall great dance accompaniment, however lost points for missed lyrics and not enough emphasis on the “DROOOOOOOOOOOOP”.

3. Maps, Yeah Yeah Yeah’s – performed by a duo (but it was all about the girl)… great song, seemingly wouldn’t be so great for karaoke cause it’s not much of a dance song, but surprisingly the vigor with which it was performed (she had the Karen O head shake like whoa, i was kinda half expecting spitting of water) plus the knowledge of all lyrics by hipsters near and far equals an amazing time.

2. Song 2, Blur – super crazy song that everyone knew, everyone jumped around, and everyone went crazy… performed by a possessed woman (seriously it got scary for a little bit)

1. Gasolina, Daddy Yankee – an unassuming white guy walks to stage, average height, long hair… steps up to the microphone looks down and starts spitting out lyrics in spanish… perfectly… with the same crazed raspy voice of Daddy Yankee… only it was a white guy. Hilarious. Amazing. Without words… we all laughed and dance like crazy.
